Another Magazine Cover… Wooohooo!
I just got the news late last week that Outdoor Canada was going to use one of my images for the cover of their summer issue. The art director debated going with the shot you see here on the final cover, or a shot of Lake Louise that I previously posted here on the blog. I love the graphics treatment that they did on this cover, especially the handwritten note with the arrow. No matter how my photographs are used, I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve, but there is something rather special about a magazine cover. The photograph was taken at Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. Jasper is just north of the more famous Banff National Park, but make no mistake, Jasper has it’s share of amazing natural beauty that rivals any location in Banff. I’m often asked which of the two National Parks I enjoyed more, and my answer is always “Yes”. ;)
The serenity that I felt in the mountains in western Canada is one of the most pleasurable sensations that I have experienced in my life. I love the ocean, and would dearly love to live in a small beach house one day, but there is something special about mountain lakes as well. The majesty of the tall peaks is complimented perfectly by the tranquility of the glacier fed lakes. I swear that I did not see one unhappy worker at any of the lakes that I visited during my time in Banff and Jasper. How could one feel anything but a wonderful sense of both awe and ahhh when surrounded by such pristine and perfect natural beauty.
One thing I do regret about my trip to Maligne Lake was the fact that I did not take the boat tour of the lake that brings you to Spirit Island. It’s one of those iconic places that is so often seen in postcards from Canada’s Rocky Mountains. Looks like I have good reason to go back now!

Toronto Bound
I’m off to Toronto today, or as the rest of Canada sarcastically calls it, the centre of the Universe. I’ll be meeting with the nice people in the art department of Outdoor Canada, as well as some other business meetings. I’m also looking forward to meeting up with Dave and Deb from The Planet D, their great adventure travel blog, check it out: http://theplanetd.com/
I was lucky enough to meet them in Jordan while on my recent shoot and now it will be nice to catch up post trip, to compare notes. I’ll also be meeting up with another fellow traveller Ivona, who writes Lil Miss Planet: http://lilmissplanet.com/
Ivona just returned from a 2 week trip to Ghana, where she was volunteering at an orphanage just outside Accra. After visiting over 40 countries in the last few years, I think she’ll have a few good stories to share!
It will also be a nice change of pace to spend some time with my sister and brother in law, who are the best hosts a visitor could dream of. Great company, amazing food and wine, and now they live in the same building as my godmother who I just adore. This is gonna be a great time.

Hope you enjoyed the photos from beautiful Jasper National Park. Shooting in Toronto this week should be a fun contrast to the the natural settings of the Rocky Mountains. I’ll have some fun urban images from this tripto share with you very soon.

Oh, these photos bring back memories. Good ones, too. I use to hike Lake Louise a lot. There’s a teahouse you can get to and once you do, you are so tired and ready to just sit and enjoy a pot of tea. Ahh, peaceful. LL is one of my favourite places on earth.
Congrats on the cover!
Hi Ken
Congrats on the cover … So peaceful … perhaps I could even catch a fish there.
Love the boathouse with all the reflections …

Congratulations Ken! So happy for your continued success! The blue boat photo is my favorite.
Wow – beautiful photos! The last photo looks like a painting. In March I went to Banff and Jasper for a few days and it was beautiful weather in Banff but very foggy in Jasper. I’ll definitely have to go back to see Jasper the way you’ve captured it!
Congratulations Ken! It is a beautiful cover. The tiny paddlers really add to the grand majesty of the place. I haven’t been there for years. We will miss it on our current trip around North America, but only because it is so close to home. We want to spend most of our time on the east coast which is much more difficult for us to get to (in the RV).
Have a great time in TO.
I LOVE that cover!! It’s truly awe-inspiring, peaceful and gorgeous. It could make anyone, I mean anyone, want to get outside to do something fun!
WOOOHOOO sums up your photo. Peace, serenity, granduer, and freedom. This photo is food for my soul, oh mighty universe.
Ken, congrats on landing the cover! What an amazing shot. I love these images… they make me want to rent a kayak and head into the wilderness ;)
Congrats! Great shots Ken
Congrats Ken. The cover picture looks great! The picture shows a little of everything the tranquility of such a place up to the adventure and the beautiful fauna. I definitely have to go to Canada soon.
