The Six Pence Pub

Savannah is a great city to walk around in. Like most world class cities, there is a lot of history, architecture, and British and Irish pubs! It’s time for a Savannah pub crawl. One of the things I rarely do is go for a drink while I’m on location for a shoot. More often than not, I’ll be going out till the early hours of the morning, so it wouldn’t be prudent to partake in the festivities at the local pubs. I’m tempted, but I really want to get my photos, so it’s a small sacrifice to make. Well, I’m not sure that “small” is the right word to use, after all we’re talking about Kilkenny, Guinness, Newcastle, Bass, and all the other awesome beers form the U.K. and Ireland. I often wonder if there is something wrong with a guy named Ken having a favourite beer named Kilkenny. This deep thought usually comes to me after indulging in a few pints of the stuff, so I usually forget all about it by the next day ;)
Murphy’s Law Pub

I would have loved to have more time in Savannah, it really has an incredible vibe, especially in the stunning historic district where all these photos were taken. I think one day, I’ll go back in the spring for a month, when the trees and flowers are in bloom. Now that would make for some stunning photos. Plus, I’d get the chance to actually hang out and socialize in these very cool looking pubs. The fish & chips must be fantastic in pubs that are in seaside cities. With access to all that fresh fish, it just has to be good. It’s not even noon yet while I’m writing this, and I’m already craving a pint and an order of fish & chips!
Molly MacPherson’s Scottish Pub

The facades of the buildings in Savannah are truly uniquely American and while they have similarities, there are a lot of variables in the style and architecture. I’ll share a whole lot more in future blog posts. I found that no matter the look, there was always something very charming about the buildings. It’s not just the history, there is that intangible feeling that you get in your gut. For me that is a feeling that makes me feel at home, at ease, and peaceful. Savannah had a way of getting under my skin, in the best way possible. The people are friendly, the city is steeped in rich American history, there is a thriving art community and it’s right on the water which to me always adds so much to a city. Where ever there is a seaport, there is an influx of traditions from other cultures that makes these cities more open and easygoing. My kinda place!
Savannah Ink Tattoo

In case you end up indulging a bit too much at one of these fine watering holes and are feeling slightly courageous, I thought I’d leave you with one last photo of a place that many people end up at, after a night out on the town.
Okay, so who will admit to getting a tattoo after drinking too much one night? Share your story in the comments!
I’ve been far too chicken to get one… yet.
I always think of this passage from Moby Dick when I think about tattoos. It makes them sound so exotic and mysterious.
And this tattooing had been the work of a departed prophet and seer of his island, who, by those hieroglyphic marks, had written out on his body a complete theory of the heavens and the earth, and a mystical treatise on the art of attaining truth; so that Queequeg in his own proper person was a riddle to unfold; a wondrous work in one volume; but whose mysteries not even himself could read, though his own live heart beat against them; and these mysteries were therefore destined in the end to moulder away with the living parchment whereon they were inscribed, and so be unsolved to the last. ~Herman Melville, Moby-Dick

I knew Savannah was a cool city, but had no idea there were all these great pubs. Looks like any city in the UK/Ireland! Particularly like the one you shot at night with the glowing telephone booth. Great stuff…Savannah is on my list of places to visit, though after I get back to the motherland (Ireland).
Great series of photos. My favorite is Molly’s. Sorry… no tattoos! :)
Wow, your photos make everywhere look cool!
Loving the pictures of Savannah – Yet another reason my wife and I are trying to move towards Georgia in the next few months.
Great photos. I love the treatment. Just one more place for me tio visit in the world. How lucky you are :-)
Amazing shots, as always! I especially love the first one, it just has a lovely feeling to it!
Love, love the colors on these pubs. And I’ve heard many good things about Savannah – definitely would love to check it out someday.
If it’s any consolation, the “kil” in Kilkenny is actually the Gaelic word for “church.” So instead of thinking of it as a threat to your life, you can think of it as your salvation!
Anyway, AWESOME, amazing photos. You just got yourself a new subscriber.
As a Canadian I’ve seen much of the States but have always wanted to go to Savannah, it has a mysterious allure. Love the HDR effects.
Amazing photos, but I am so sad to see the The Rail is gone. It used to be where Murphy’s Law is now. It was the best dive bar in town. We would hop from the Rail to B&B Billards all night long, then have a slice at Vinnie’s. Savannah really has changed in 10 years. But I am so glad you went and had an amazing time. I’m hoping to get back there next year and see everything that has happened since we left. Happy traveling in the steamy south!
Hi Ken, I love your photography I have been trying to get into it more myself to complement my blog posts, have even treated myself to a Panasonic travel Zoom camera
Savannah is somewhere I would really love to visit also and i like your idea of a photographic pub crawl, whilst writing posts is great I love the idea of photographic posts so hope to see more :)
Great photography. I’d visit Savannah Ink Tattoo even when I’m sober. Wait, I might just be drunk now. The tattoo place has some nice architecture though. :)
Molly looks homely. Nice..
Cheers
Seriously stunning photos. I’ve been dying to go to Savannah for years. I’m so drawn by the Southern charm it has…and these photos make me want to go even more! On a drinking tour of course… :)
Great photos. When I was working we used to go up the Savannah river to the port. I never managed to go into the city itself though :( James
