Canada’s national parks in the Rocky Mountains have to be on your list of must see places. You could spend years exploring there and still find new stunning vistas on a daily basis. The only place that I have seen that can compare to Alberta and British Columbia’s natural richness is the south island of New Zealand. The colours of the lakes are so bright green, turquoise and blue that you have to close your eyes for a moment and take a second look just to make sure that you’re not imagining things. Emerald Lake pictured here is just one of many glacier fed lakes in the region. Some are inaccessible by car and require you to hike there. Others like the extremely well named Emerald Lake, are accessible by car and have log cabins for rent, as well as the very picturesque Cilantro on the Lake restaurant, and a boat house where you can rent canoes to explore the lake. Big thank you to the nice people at the boat house for letting me get on their dock to take a few shots of Emerald Lake and the mountain range in the background.

Hiking through the mountains I’d often wonder what it would have been like to be the first person to see such amazing places in their natural state. So it’s nice to see when the owners of homes and tourism based businesses really respect the natural surroundings, by constructing environmentally friendly and visually pleasing buildings befitting the surrounding natural splendor. It must be a pleasure to work at a place like the Emerald Lake Lodge and take in the view on a daily basis, I don’t think it would be possible to get tired of looking at all that natural beauty.

I hope that I can get back to the parks in the winter to do some shooting with all that white pristine snow, so I guess I’ll have to put them back on the list of must see places. It’s a long list!

Enjoy more fun photography and stories from the road:
