Here is the last of the images in this series from the Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. We are looking at the main doors with our backs to the tabernacle in the central nave of the church. I mentioned the 265 portraits of the Popes in the frieze above the columns in part 3 but what I didn’t mention was the legend. Apparently the world is supposed to come to an end after the remaining 14 medallions run out. Thanks to my friend Gaby for the apocalyptic update. Hmmm… I think that I’ll worry about the Mayan prediction of the end of time on Dec 21st 2012 before I start to panic about this legend. I like my apocalypses one at a time :^)
And with all the talk of endings thus ends this series of images from Rome’s beautiful Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. I hope that you’ve enjoyed the photography and perhaps you’ll now be tempted to visit the church on your next trip to Rome. Arrivederci Roma, I hope to see you again very soon.
